Post-Treatment Timeline

Immediately After (0-24 hours)

Treated area may appear red and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. Apply cool compresses if needed and avoid heat, exercise, and friction to the area.

Days 1-3

Redness should subside. You may notice small bumps around hair follicles which is normal. Continue to avoid heat-inducing activities and apply recommended soothing products.

Days 3-14

Treated hairs will begin to shed and appear to be "growing" as they push out of the follicle. This is not new growth but the shedding process. Gently exfoliate after day 7 to help this process.

Weeks 2-4

Most shedding should be complete. Protect the area from sun exposure and follow the recommended skincare routine. Schedule your next treatment (typically 4-8 weeks later depending on the treatment area).

Essential Post-Care Instructions

Heat & Sun Protection

  • Avoid direct sun exposure to treated areas for at least 7-14 days
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to treated areas that may be exposed to the sun
  • Avoid tanning beds, saunas, hot tubs, and very hot showers for at least 48 hours
  • Skip strenuous exercise that causes excessive sweating for 24-48 hours

Skin Care & Hygiene

  • Keep the area clean using mild, fragrance-free soap
  • Apply recommended soothing products like aloe vera gel or post-laser balm
  • Avoid applying makeup to treated facial areas for 24 hours
  • Wear loose, soft clothing over treated areas to minimize friction

Activities to Avoid

  • Do not pluck, wax, thread, use depilatory creams, or bleach between treatments
  • Avoid exfoliating the area for at least 7 days (then gentle exfoliation is encouraged)
  • Skip swimming in chlorinated pools or salt water for 48 hours
  • Avoid applying perfumed products, retinoids, glycolic acid, or other potentially irritating products to the treated area for 48-72 hours

When to Contact Us

  • If you experience blistering, excessive redness, swelling, or pain that worsens after 24 hours
  • If you develop a rash, hives, or other signs of an allergic reaction
  • If you notice signs of infection such as increased warmth, pus, or fever
  • If you have any concerns about how your skin is healing

Normal Reactions vs. Complications

It's important to understand the difference between normal post-treatment reactions and complications that require attention:

Normal Reactions:
Redness & Warmth

Similar to a mild sunburn, should subside within 24-48 hours

Follicular Edema

Small bumps around hair follicles, resolves within 1-3 days

Hair Shedding

Treated hairs falling out over 1-3 weeks

Mild Itching

As skin heals, some itching is normal

Complications (Contact Us):
Blistering or Crusting

Fluid-filled blisters or scab formation

Excessive Swelling

Significant swelling that worsens after 24 hours

Signs of Infection

Increased warmth, pus, or fever

Severe Pain

Pain that increases rather than decreases after treatment

Important: If you experience any complications or are unsure about your skin's reaction, please contact our clinic immediately. Taking photos of your concern can help us better assess the situation.

Recommended Post-Care Products

1

Soothing Agents

Apply cooling and soothing products to reduce redness and discomfort. Pure aloe vera gel (without alcohol or fragrance) is excellent for calming treated skin. Our clinic's post-laser balm is specifically formulated to accelerate healing.

2

Sun Protection

Treated skin is more susceptible to sun damage. Apply a broad-spectrum physical (mineral) sunscreen with SPF 30+ daily to all treated areas that may be exposed to the sun, even on cloudy days. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.

3

Gentle Cleanser

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that won't irritate sensitive post-treatment skin. Avoid harsh soaps, scrubs, or cleansers containing active ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid for at least 3 days.

4

Gentle Exfoliation (After 7 Days)

After the initial healing period (7+ days), gentle exfoliation can help with the shedding process of treated hairs. Use a soft washcloth or gentle exfoliating product to help release hairs that are in the process of shedding.

Tips for Optimal Results

Treatment Schedule

  • Adhere to your recommended treatment schedule (typically 4-8 weeks apart)
  • Complete the full series of treatments (usually 6-8 sessions) for best results
  • Schedule maintenance treatments as recommended (typically 1-2 times per year)
  • Contact us if you need to reschedule; maintaining proper intervals is important

Hair Removal Between Sessions

  • Only use shaving to remove hair between laser sessions
  • Never pluck, wax, thread, or use depilatory creams between treatments
  • Shave at least 24 hours before your next treatment
  • Report any changes in hair growth pattern to your technician

Frequently Asked Questions

After laser treatment, the hair doesn't fall out immediately. The laser damages the follicle, but the hair shaft takes time to shed, typically 1-3 weeks. What you're seeing is not new growth but the treated hair being pushed out of the follicle. This shedding process is normal and a sign that the treatment is working. Gentle exfoliation after 7 days can help speed up this process. If you notice new growth 6-8 weeks after treatment, this is likely hair that was in the dormant phase during your treatment and will need to be targeted in subsequent sessions.

Redness and mild swelling are normal reactions and typically subside within 24-48 hours. The duration varies depending on your skin sensitivity, the treatment area, and the laser settings used. Facial areas tend to recover more quickly than body areas. Applying cool compresses and recommended soothing products can help reduce these symptoms. If redness or swelling persists beyond 48 hours or worsens after initially improving, please contact our clinic as this may indicate a more serious reaction requiring attention.

It's best to avoid applying makeup to treated facial areas for at least 24 hours after treatment. This allows your skin to breathe and heal without potential irritation from makeup products. When you do resume using makeup, ensure your brushes and applicators are clean to prevent introducing bacteria to the treated area. Consider using mineral-based makeup products, which are generally less irritating to post-treatment skin. If you must apply makeup sooner for an important event, discuss this with your technician who may provide specific recommendations for your skin type and treatment.

You should avoid potentially irritating skincare products for 48-72 hours after treatment. This includes products containing retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or other active ingredients. After this initial healing period, you can gradually reintroduce your regular skincare products, starting with the gentlest ones first. If you use prescription topicals like tretinoin, consult with your dermatologist about when to resume use. For products like vitamin C serums or other antioxidants, wait at least 48 hours before reapplying. Always monitor your skin's reaction when reintroducing products and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

It's recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours after laser hair removal. Exercise increases body temperature and causes sweating, which can irritate freshly treated skin and potentially lead to complications like folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles). Heat and sweat can also increase the risk of hyperpigmentation in some individuals. Light activities like walking are generally fine. When you do return to your workout routine, wear loose, breathable clothing over treated areas, shower promptly after exercising, and avoid tight workout clothes that cause friction against treated skin. If you've had facial treatment, avoid wearing makeup during workouts for the first week.

If you get a sunburn between laser treatments, it's important to reschedule your appointment until the sunburn has completely healed. Treating sunburned skin with laser can lead to blistering, hyperpigmentation, or scarring. Contact our clinic immediately to reschedule. To care for your sunburn, take cool baths or showers, apply aloe vera or moisturizers, drink extra water, and avoid further sun exposure. Once the sunburn has completely healed (no redness or peeling), wait an additional 2 weeks before resuming treatment. Moving forward, be vigilant about sun protection to avoid delays in your treatment schedule and to maintain the best results from your laser hair removal.

Mild itching is a normal part of the healing process after laser hair removal. It typically begins 1-3 days after treatment and can last for several days as the skin heals and treated hairs begin to shed. To manage itching, keep the area moisturized with recommended post-care products, apply cool compresses, wear loose clothing to reduce friction, and avoid scratching which can lead to irritation or infection. If the itching is severe, widespread, accompanied by a rash, or persists beyond a week, contact our clinic as this could indicate an allergic reaction or other complication requiring attention. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream (1%) may be used sparingly for severe itching, but consult with us before applying it to facial areas.

Several signs indicate your laser hair removal treatment is working effectively: 1) Hair shedding within 1-3 weeks after treatment, 2) Reduced hair regrowth in the treated area, 3) Finer and lighter hair when regrowth does occur, 4) Longer intervals between needing to shave, and 5) Smoother skin texture. Results are gradual and become more noticeable after multiple sessions. Keep in mind that different body areas respond at different rates, with facial hair often requiring more treatments due to hormonal influences. Taking "before" photos before each session can help you objectively track your progress. If you don't notice any reduction in hair growth after 3-4 treatments, consult with your technician as your treatment plan may need adjustment.

Yes, shaving is the only recommended method of hair removal between laser treatments. Unlike waxing or plucking, shaving only removes the hair above the skin's surface while leaving the follicle intact, which is necessary for the laser to target during your next session. You can shave as soon as 48 hours after treatment if the skin is not irritated. Use a clean, sharp razor and shaving cream or gel to minimize irritation. Avoid shaving if the skin is still red or sensitive from treatment. Remember to shave 3-5 days before your next appointment so the technician can see a small amount of hair growth, which helps them target the follicles effectively. Electric razors are also acceptable between treatments.

Most clients will need occasional maintenance treatments after completing their initial series of 6-8 sessions. While laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth, it may not result in permanent, complete hair removal for everyone. Hormonal changes, genetics, and the body area treated all influence long-term results. Typically, maintenance sessions are needed every 6-12 months, with some clients requiring them less frequently. Areas influenced by hormones (like facial hair in women or the bikini area) may need more regular maintenance. Some clients find that after their initial series, they're satisfied with the reduction and choose not to pursue maintenance treatments. During your final initial treatment, your technician will assess your results and recommend a personalized maintenance schedule if needed.
