Microchanneling Pre-Treatment Care

Essential preparation guidelines for optimal results and safety

Prepare for Your Microchanneling Treatment

Follow these important pre-treatment guidelines to ensure the best possible results and minimize any potential side effects from your microchanneling therapy session.

Before Your Appointment

Please arrive with a clean face without makeup. Men should be clean-shaven. This ensures optimal treatment conditions and reduces the risk of complications.

Hydration

If receiving PRP or PRF treatment, drink an extra 24-32 oz of water for 2-3 days prior to your appointment for optimal blood draw results.

Medications

If you get cold sores regularly, taking acyclovir or valcyclovir starting one day before treatment can reduce the likelihood of a breakout.

Discontinue Products

Stop using retinol (2% or higher) or tretinoin at least 3 days prior to treatment to prevent skin sensitivity and irritation.

Hair Treatment Prep

If being treated for hair loss, please arrive with the shortest haircut possible and clean hair without sprays or gels.

Previous Treatments

If you've had Botox, Fillers, or Threads injected, wait at least two weeks before microchanneling and ensure you're satisfied with those results first.

What to Expect Timeline

First Treatment (.25mm)

Numbing cream typically not necessary. Expect mild redness, swelling, and a tight, warm sensation for 4-24 hours after treatment.

Later Treatments (Longer Needles)

May require topical numbing cream. Can produce redness, swelling, and tiny flecks of redness for 4-72 hours post-treatment.

Pain Management

If your liver, kidneys, and immune system are healthy, taking an NSAID such as Ibuprofen 2 hours before treatment may reduce discomfort.

Post-Treatment

Follow all aftercare instructions provided by your specialist for optimal healing and results.

Contraindications for Microchanneling

Pregnancy & Nursing

If you are pregnant or nursing, you are advised to avoid microchanneling treatments. No studies have been conducted on effects on unborn children, so it's best to avoid any elective cosmetic procedures during this time.

Diabetes

Patients with unstable diabetes should not undergo treatment due to potential healing problems and increased risk of complications.

Active Herpes Simplex

Treatment is possible once the outbreak is healed. Consider taking prescription-strength antiviral medication to keep this condition in remission during your treatment series.

Dry Skin

If your skin is overly dry, you'll need to start moisturizing and ensure the condition is under control prior to undergoing any microchanneling treatment.

Active Inflammatory Skin Conditions

Any active inflammatory skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis, infection, rash, or any type of dermatitis at the treatment site should be resolved before treatment, as microchanneling may aggravate these conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microchanneling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create thousands of invisible micro-perforations in the skin. This stimulates the body's natural wound healing process, encouraging collagen and elastin production for improved skin texture, reduced scarring, and a more youthful appearance.

While both treatments create micro-injuries to stimulate collagen production, microchanneling typically uses a stamping motion with disposable needle cartridges, which can be more precise and less traumatic to the skin than the rolling motion used in traditional microneedling. Microchanneling devices often deliver serums more effectively and may cause less discomfort.

Many patients notice an immediate "glow" after treatment, but significant results typically appear after 2-4 weeks as collagen production increases. For optimal results, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is usually recommended, with continued improvement for up to 6 months after completing the treatment series.

Discomfort levels vary depending on needle length and individual pain tolerance. For first treatments with shorter needles (.25mm), most patients experience minimal discomfort and numbing cream is typically not necessary. For treatments with longer needles, topical numbing cream is often applied 30 minutes before the procedure to ensure comfort.

Microchanneling can effectively treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and can even be used for hair restoration. The treatment stimulates natural collagen production and enhances product absorption, making it versatile for multiple skin concerns.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) are derived from your own blood and contain growth factors that accelerate healing and collagen production. When combined with microchanneling, these substances can be delivered deeper into the skin, enhancing results by providing additional regenerative benefits and reducing recovery time.

Downtime varies depending on treatment intensity. For first treatments with shorter needles, expect mild redness and a tight sensation for 4-24 hours. For treatments with longer needles, redness, swelling, and tiny flecks of redness may last 4-72 hours. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours, though sun exposure should be avoided for at least a week.

It's recommended to avoid makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment to prevent introducing bacteria into the microchannels created during the procedure. When you do resume wearing makeup, use clean brushes and consider mineral-based products, which are less likely to cause irritation.
